Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Centered on the final days of Pope John Paul II, Read's uneven thriller will appeal mainly to those interested in Catholic theology. British journalist Kate Ramsey, who's covering the Old Bailey trial of three men accused by MI6 of plotting a sarin attack, is drawn to one of the defendants, Juan Uriarte, who testifies that he was seeking the poison gas to use as a deterrent against warlords in the Sudan, where he works for the Catholic Refugee Service. After the trial ends in acquittal, Ramsey gets herself assigned to cover Uriarte's relief work in Africa. Rather implausibly, Ramsey agrees to Uriarte's request that she transport on a plane flight a thermos that he claims contains a Nag Hammadi scroll. Meanwhile, British intelligence believes a megaterror event is in the works, and as John Paul II nears death, villains scheme to rig the succession. Read remains best known for Alive (1974), his nonfiction account of Andes air crash survivors who resort to cannibalism. (May)

Review

In The Death of a Pope, the versatile Piers Paul Read, who has distinguished himself in many genres, returns to what can be called the ecclesiastical thriller. If the mystery looks to the past to explain a crime already committed, the thriller aims to prevent something from happening. When that something is a terrorist act, planned for the Vatican, drama is assured, and Read, writing in the present tense but in multiple viewpoint, takes us from character to character, from city to city, from continent to continent, with everything converging on the Vatican during the conclave following the death of John Paul II. To say more would rob the reader of his pleasure. The Death of a Pope is a great Read - in every sense of the term.
- Ralph McInerny

The Death of a Pope is a faith-driven theological thriller, narrated by a storyteller of the first order whose unassailable orthodoxy is as refreshing as it is rare among the bedraggled ranks of contemporary novelists.
-Joseph Pearce, author The Quest for Shakespeare

Piers Paul Read has managed to combine sheer storytelling power with great learning and insight about the inner workings of the Church to fashion an entertainment of the highest order. If John LeCarre took on Vatican politics, his book of suspense might aspire to be much like this one
-Ron Hansen, author Exiles

If you love the Catholic Church, you will probably love this book whether or not you love a good story. If you love a good story, you will probably love this book whether or not you love the Catholic Church. But if you love both the Church and a good story, you will certainly love this book.
- Peter Kreeft, author Because God is Real

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, May 15, 2009
By P. B. McCaffery (Notre Dame, IN) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Finally, a British novelist who can write without showing his obsessed hatred of the papacy. It is ironic, however, that this is what the book's plot is all about. Piers Paul Read is a good writer; and he's a better reader, which as usual helps the writing. His style is quick, it is intriguing. Very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Thriller, June 5, 2009
By Amos Lassen (Little Rock, Arkansas) - See all my reviews

Reid, Piers Paul. "The Death of a Pope", Ignatius Press, 2009.

A New Thriller

Jean Uriarte is a handsome and well-spoken Spanish ex-priest who favors nonviolence and compassion for the poor. However he is on trial for terrorist activities because his outreach program of Catholic charity is suspected of being a front for terrorist activity. Kate Ramsay is covering the trial; she is a young British reporter who sets out to find out the truth. She goes with him to Africa to see what she can learn and finds herself attracted to him.
At the same time an international conspiracy is picking up speed and it reaches into the Vatican, When Pope John II's death brings about a conclave to elect John Ratzinger as pope Benedict XVI, a terrorist plot which favors blackmail, subterfuge and mass murder begins to take hold and this plot could mean disaster for Catholics the world over.
Read can tell a story and his knowledge of the inner workings of the Catholic Church shines through his writing. Here is a psychological thriller that is driven by faith that will keep you on the edge of your chair. It fuses elements of thriller with substance and Read's characters are expertly drawn. This is a story of lust, betrayal, intrigue and love and redemption built around the death of one pope and the election of another. It's a page turner to the end and it is a quick moving and easy read.

4.0 out of 5 stars an engaging read, May 30, 2009
By coolhandluke1967 (Napa, CA United States) - See all my reviews
While clearly not its primary concern, Piers Paul Read's DEATH OF A POPE serves as a worthy antidote to the mindnumbing idiocy and borderline illiteracy of ANGELS & DEMONS. DEATH OF A POPE effectively fuses elements of the page-turning thriller [mostly in the second half of the book] with some actual substance [characters of differing ideological outlook represent issues confronting the Catholic Church in the twenty-first century]. While certainly not on the level of THE POWER & THE GLORY or BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, it is a quick, engaging read and a worthwhile addition to one's summer reading list.
